WoW Addons
« on: November 20, 2014, 09:02:57 PM »
There are thousands of addons out there. Some are good, some are silly, some are out of date.

Everyone has their own preferences. The "Curse" client is a popular way to automatically install addons and keep them updated. However, I don't trust Curse anymore because they got breached a couple years ago and caused a lot of people to lose their account info. Anyhow they just seem a little too commercialized and gimmicky for my tastes. In general, I try to get addons directly from the source, or WoW Interface, whenever possible.

The addons I use are mostly old-school ones that have been around for years, almost since the beginning, and most are considered essential for raiding and dungeoneering.

First off, here's a pretty good guide on how to install addons:

http://www.wowinterface.com/forums/faq.php?faq=install

Now here are the addons I use:

Deadly Boss Mods
http://www.deadlybossmods.com
(Scroll down and use the Core Downloads listed on the right navigation pane, right under the tip jar.)
This basically tells you where to stand, where not to stand, and what's going on during most boss fights. It's a must-have!

CTMod
http://www.ctmod.net/downloads/
CTMod is primarily a hotbar addon, but it also has a few other features, like the ability to add notes to the map, and a whole bunch of other stuff I can't recall. It's been around forever though - it was one of the original hotbar addons.

Auctioneer
http://auctioneeraddon.com/dl/
This mod searches auctions when you post items for sale, and has a lot of cool features to help with professions, gathering, and money making.

Titan Panel
http://www.titanpanel.org/downloads.html
This one is just about my favorite! It shows you all your gold, plus the added gold from all your characters, how much you're making per hour, etc. It also tracks XP per hour, time to level, and a whole slew of other useful info. It's a fairly unobtrusive bar at the top of the screen, and is super super handy!

WoW Pro and TomTom
http://wow-pro.com/addon/ & http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info7032-TomTom.html
This is a leveling guide that gives you an arrow telling you where to go to pick up quests, do quests, and turn them in. It also tells you when to sell, when to pick up flight points, and points out areas of interest like hidden treasures and cool things. It's super duper handy, probably about the fastest way to level.

Recount
http://www.wowace.com/addons/recount/files/1692-v6-0-3b-release/
This is a DPS meter; probably about the most popular one. You can display all kinds of stats with it, and it's super handy to find out how you're doing with your healing, tanking, and damage dealing.

Healbot
http://healbot.darktech.org/index.php/downloads/hbreleases
This one lets you do one-click healing to help optimize your rotation as a healer. It gives you new Unit Frames (a party list) that lets you click on party members, and it will automatically select the best heal and heal them. It's extremely popular for healers, although I must confess I only recently installed it and haven't yet tried it in action.

GTFO
http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info17996-GTFO.html
GTFO alerts you if you're standing in bad. It can either play a sound or display something. It's useful especially if you have to turn your graphics down and you can't SEE the bad stuff to stay out of. But also, sometimes you might be standing in bad but there's so much going on it's hard to tell. So just install GTFO and GTFO!

HandyNotes
http://www.wowace.com/addons/handynotes/
Find all those hidden treasures, unique bosses, clickables, and easter eggs with HandyNotes! Level faster, get better gear.

If you have addons you can't live without, feel free to share them. Have fun and happy hunting!

Where do you think it would be best to find Deadly Boss Mods? Or is it still necessary to have it?

Updated the list to include

GTFO

GTFO alerts you if you're standing in bad. It can either play a sound or display something. My McAfee quarantined DBM saying it was an infected file. Do you think it's just overreacting?

I bet it was just over reacting.  I am not a huge fan of McAfee, as it tends to give false positives like that.

McAfee hasn't been very good since the 90s. Bitdefender is pretty reliable. Kefob sells one that's based on Bitdefender but I forget what it's called.

I've benefited greatly with this set up:

Deadly Boss Mods: So that alarms and announcements go off when something important is about to happen

GTFO: That buzzes at me like I got an answer VERY wrong in a game show when I'm standing in something bad

TellMeWhen: So I can see when my important cooldowns are up and ready to be used.

Recount: This is really only needed for end game content or if a person is curious about how their dps stacks up against others in groups. I have a competitive streak, so now I'm a little addicted to recount, but I went for years without it (back when I wasn't raiding).

Then I have a few non-combat things like Auctionator, Gatherer, and Altaholic.

Maybe it's only a problem for Olde People, but I have trouble losing track of my cursor position, especially when things get busy.  _Cursor is an addon that can attach auras to your cursor to make it shine, sparkle or leave colourful smoke trails so it's easy to find. Yes, the name begins with an underscore.

_Cursor: http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/cursor

Despite Zanriel's cautionary note about Curse, I find the client to be tremendously useful for addon management.  Do not use the same username/password for Curse as you use for WoW.  (Don't use the same username/password for *any* services.)

Yes Phos! These days IskarAssist is a total must have for HFC in particular.

And I find your cursor addon intriguing, Cap!! How user friendly is the interface for it? I have a very difficult time understanding how to use new addons once I get them.

The interface for _Cursor is reasonably friendly.  There is an excessively thorough tutorial for it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVMjxYNW11I .   I've found only two problems while using it:
1) judging the size of the effect is difficult in the interface control, it can take a few hops back and forth between the configuration and normal view to get the effect you want, and
2) the interface provides three layers to configure but for me the results get flaky if you apply more than two layers.

_Cursor is awesome. I picked it up for exactly the same reasons Coulton did. Too many raid fights going, "Where the heck is my cursor?! I need to click targets!"

I'd love to see more people get InterruptManager. It's the add-on I use for setting up interrupt rotations & notifications. It works well, but is much more compelling if everyone has it.

The add-on I literally will not play my DK without is CompactRunes. Makes a little postage stamp size window with incredibly simple but perfectly visualized status of all your runes, diseases, and runic power, all in one place.

I replaced many of my other addons with ElvUI, which definitely takes a time commitment to set up (couple of hours for me) but profoundly improves on the default Blizzard UI, with a sleek, consistent look & feel throughout. And, as mentioned, likely lets you delete several other add-ons whose functionality ElvUI already includes.
